Owners Attacked by Their Dog

On August 4, 2021 at approximately 7:17am, Springfield Police and Central Lane 911 received multiple calls regarding an incident that was eventually determined to be a dog attacking its owners within the backyard of an apartment at Jenna Village, 4885 Aster St.

Springfield Police and Eugene Springfield Fire personnel responded.

After arriving, officers discovered that during the attack, a neighbor shot the dog with a small caliber gun in an effort to save the couple. The dog then went back into the apartment, and the neighbor shut the dog in.

Police and fire personnel were then able to get to the patients, who were still in the back yard where the attack happened, by removing fence boards from the adjoining apartment’s yard. Both patients had extensive injuries and are being treated at the hospital.

Due to the extent of the owner’s injuries, they consented to having the dog euthanized. Animal Control Officer Austin was able to remove the involved injured dog from the residence and transport him to the Emergency Veterinary Hospital, where the dog was euthanized.

Our investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident will continue.

There is no further threat to the community
