NARRATIVE OF INCIDENT:

On February 4th, 2022 Springfield Police responded to a robbery at the Thurston Market at 6590 Thurston Road.  Two male suspects entered the location and sprayed a store employee with pepper spray, then proceeded to take money and other items.  The suspects departed the area before responding officers arrived.

Officers provided aid to the employee and began an initial investigation.  The investigation was turned over to detectives who worked for a week developing leads and information on the case.  Based on evidence collected by patrol officers, a suspect vehicle was identified.  There were numerous unique features of the vehicle.  Security footage showing both the suspects and their vehicle was shared agency wide.

On Friday, February 11th a hit and run occurred at the intersection of Pioneer Parkway East and “B” Street, just across the street from the Springfield Justice Center.  Alert SPD dispatchers were able to watch the suspect vehicle hit the stop sign, shearing the pole in half, and drive away westbound on “B” Street.  Additionally, dispatch staff was able to identify the suspect vehicle in the hit and run as the same vehicle from the robbery.  This information was shared with responding units as they started checking the area for the vehicle.  With assistance from a witness in the City Prosecutor’s Office, the suspect vehicle was located in the 400 block of “A” Street.

Detectives responded and were able to contact Sommer Brandner as she returned to the vehicle.  The investigation revealed Brandner was responsible for the hit and run and she was cited for Hit and Run – Property Damage.

Brandner was interviewed regarding her knowledge of the robbery and information was obtained that lead to the identification of the robbery suspects:  Todd Orcutt-Garrett and James Haynes.  Detectives were able to contact Orcutt-Garrett at a residence in west Eugene where he was taken into custody without incident.  Further information was obtained that Haynes would likely be located in the Veneta area.  The Lane County Sherriff’s Office and Oregon State Police located Haynes and took him into custody without incident.  Haynes was transported to the Springfield Police Department to be interviewed by detectives regarding his role in the robbery.

Both Orcutt-Garrett and Haynes were lodged at the Lane County Jail for Robbery in the Second Degree.

This case demonstrates the collaborative nature of police work – every division within the Springfield Police Department contributed, as well as partner agencies.  Each worked together to bring the case to a close in a rapid manner as well as providing the victim peace of mind that the suspects were arrested and are being held accountable for their actions.
