Springfield Public Library Closures

Springfield Public Library will be closed on Friday December 24, Saturday December 25, Friday December 31 and Saturday January 1 to observe the holidays. The book drops will be open to receive returned items.

The Library’s regular hours: noon to 7 p.m., Mondays; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesdays; noon to 3 p.m., Wednesday; noon to 7 p.m., Thursdays 12; and noon to 3 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays. The Library is closed on Sundays.

Springfield Celebrates Authors with ‘Braiding Sweetgrass’

Springfield Celebrates Authors 2022 kicks off with a ‘Braiding Sweetgrass’ book club and a book giveaway, thanks to the Friends of Springfield Public Library and the University of Oregon Common Reading program. Those who register in advance can pick up a free copy of ‘Braiding Sweetgrass’ by Robin Wall Kimmerer (while supplies last) to prepare for the upcoming book club, which will be at 1 p.m., Friday, January 21.

“We are thrilled to partner with the University of Oregon Common Reading Program to kick off Springfield Celebrates Authors,” Adult Services Librarian Mark Riddle said. “This is a fantastic book, and we are very grateful to the Friends of Springfield Public Library for purchasing copies for our participants.”

Patrons can register for the hybrid book club now at wheremindsgrow.org/events and will then be able to collect their copy of the book at the library. The book club will be presented in a hybrid format – patrons can attend either in person, or via Zoom. Author Robin Wall Kimmerer will give a lecture at the University of Oregon on January 24.

Springfield Celebrates Authors is an annual celebration of local, national, and international authors speaking at the Springfield Public Library. This year’s program continues at 3 p.m., Saturday, February 5 with local author Danuta Pfeiffer and her new novel ‘Libertas’.

All events are free and open to the community.

A free Sci-Fi Horror film in Springfield

A cold, dark January evening is the perfect time to enjoy a free showing of a cult science fiction horror film as SPRINGfilm presents John Carpenter’s ‘The Thing’. At 6:30 p.m., Thursday, January 13 come to the Wildish Theater in downtown Springfield and watch as an American research station in Antarctica is besieged by … something. After helicopter pilot R.J. Macready (Kurt Russel) witnesses a helicopter crash, biologist Blair (Wilford Brimley), performs an autopsy on a strange corpse which appears to be not of this earth.  Soon something is preying upon the other members of the expedition. Reviled upon release, ‘The Thing’ has become a cult classic and now recognized as one of the best science fiction and horror movies ever made. Masks will be required to attend this showing.

SPRINGfilm continues at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, February 10, 2022 with a free Valentine’s Day week showing of “Strictly Ballroom”. Masks will be required to attend this showing.
