The Springfield Public Library, in partnership with Singing Creek Educational Center, is pleased to host a free cultural presentation featuring Stephanie Craig, MA:IS, a traditional Kalapuya weaver. The event will take place on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. and offers an engaging look into Kalapuya culture and traditional basketry. This family-friendly presentation is best suited for ages 6 and up.
Stephanie Craig is a 7th generation traditional basket weaver and a practitioner of traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) and Indigenous lifeways. Drawing inspiration from her Kalapuya ancestors, who were master basket weavers, Stephanie continues the rich tradition of using ancestral methods and indigenous plants to create beautiful and functional art. In addition to being a culture keeper and educator, Stephanie holds a Master of Arts in Indigenous Studies and multiple certifications in Tribal Museum Studies, Cultural Resource Management, and more.
During the presentation, Stephanie will share her cultural journey and showcase examples of traditional basketry, offering attendees a glimpse into her family’s legacy and the enduring artistry of the Kalapuya people.
This event is sponsored by the Woodard Family Foundation, the City of Cottage Grove, and participating libraries. For more information, visit Kalapuya: A Native American cultural presentation
