Springfield, OR – The City of Springfield invites the community to join in celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Springfield Flame during the annual Springfield’s The Block Party on Saturday, September 12, from 4 to 10 p.m. in downtown Springfield.
The 62-foot public sculpture has welcomed residents and visitors at Springfield’s northern gateway since 2016 and has become one of the community’s most recognizable landmarks.
Visitors to the City and Team Springfield booth can learn more about the story behind the Springfield Flame and pick up commemorative items while supplies last, including anniversary posters, T-shirts, stickers and other Springfield giveaways. The City will also hand out individual bags of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos featuring a commemorative Springfield Flame sticker.
Installed on October 3, 2016, at Gateway Street and Randy Papé Beltline, the Springfield Flame was designed by internationally recognized sculptor Devin Laurence Field. The sculpture was created through the City’s Public Art Program to establish a welcoming landmark at Springfield’s northern gateway. At 62 feet tall, it is Oregon’s largest public sculpture.
“The Springfield Flame was created to welcome people to our community,” said Mayor Sean VanGordon, “and over the past ten years it has become much more than a landmark. It represents Springfield’s creativity, our sense of possibility, and what we can accomplish when people come together around a shared vision. This anniversary is an opportunity to celebrate the many people and partnerships that brought the Springfield Flame to life and helped make it part of Springfield’s identity.”
City departments will also connect with community members at Springfield’s The Block Party through activities including:
- Comprehensive Planning/Housing: Community engagement related to housing, Climate Friendly Areas, Housing + Design projects and an upcoming community survey.
- Emergency Management: Emergency preparedness information and community resources with Eugene-Springfield CERT volunteers.
- Operations: Recruitment and career information.
- Active Transportation: Transportation-related activities and information.
- Springfield Public Library and Springfield History Museum: Family-friendly activities and information in connection with Herencia Hispana, with the Museum open during the event.
Springfield Police Department will provide public safety support during the event.
