Springfield, OR -– The City of Springfield hosted a special ceremony today at City Plaza in recognition of Indigenous Peoples’ Day, honoring the history, culture, and contributions of Indigenous communities.
The event featured a proclamation reading by Mayor Sean VanGordon and the raising of flags from the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde and the Confederated Tribes of the Siletz. A formal land acknowledgment was also read, recognizing the Kalapuya people as the original stewards of the land and reaffirming the City’s commitment to strengthening relationships with Indigenous communities.
“Indigenous Peoples’ Day is a chance for us to pause, listen, and reflect on the stories that shape our community,” said Mayor Sean VanGordon. “By honoring the resilience of Indigenous peoples and recognizing their continued contributions, we are reminded that Springfield’s future must be built with respect, inclusion, and shared responsibility.”
City Manager Nancy Newton emphasized the importance of this annual recognition: “This ceremony reflects our commitment to honoring Indigenous voices and building stronger connections through collaboration and cultural understanding. The raising of these flags is more than symbolic. It is a visible reminder of the partnerships and shared history we carry forward together.”
