NARRATIVE OF INCIDENT:
On 7/3/25 at approximately 9:40pm, Springfield Police responded alongside Eugene Springfield
Fire to a house fire in the 400 block of 36th Street. Initial details provided by the caller indicated
she and her husband were in a dispute prior to the start of the fire. The male reportedly poured
gasoline throughout the house then intentionally lit the house on fire while firing a firearm inside
the residence.
Patrol officers arrived on scene to find the female safely outside of the house. There were still
gunshots going off inside the location. The fire grew as officers contained the scene and started
evacuating neighboring residences due to the danger from the growing fire as well as gunshots
coming from inside the house.
Eugene Springfield Fire was staged in the area waiting for police to render the scene safe enough
for them to approach. The resources needed to provide adequate protection for firefighters
responded from multiple area law enforcement agencies. The Eugene Police Department as well
as the Lane County Sheriff’s Office provided both personnel and armored rescue vehicles to
assist SPD SWAT with shielding firefighters from danger as they approached the residence and
started putting water on the fire. The fire was primarily contained to the involved residence with
the neighboring homes sustaining limited damage. Drones from both LCSO and SPD were
utilized to monitor the scene until the fire was out.
Once the fire was out, a deceased subject was located inside the residence. No rounds were fired
by law enforcement during this event.
Springfield Police Detectives responded to the scene and are working with the Fire Marshal’s
Office as well as the Lane County Medical Examiner’s Office on the investigation.
