NARRATIVE OF INCIDENT:

On the afternoon of February 18th, the Springfield Police Department received a report alleging that a man attempted to kidnap an 8-year-old child in the area of Gateway Street and Harlow Road.

Officers responded promptly and initiated a thorough investigation into the allegation. This included interviewing the involved child and their parent, canvassing for potential witnesses, and reviewing available information related to the reported incident.

SPD Detectives are involved in this investigation and have collected digital evidence, to include area video surveillance. At this time, investigators have not corroborated the report, and no evidence has been identified to substantiate that a crime occurred.

SPD understands that reports involving children are especially concerning to families and the broader community. We want to reassure the public that we take all reports of this nature seriously and dedicate appropriate investigative resources to ensure the safety and well-being of those involved.

Based on the information currently available, there is no indication of an ongoing threat to the community.
