NARRATIVE OF INCIDENT:
On November 29, 2024, at 2000hrs, Officers with the Springfield Police Department working during the SPD Crime Reduction Unit’s ‘Black Friday’ Retail Theft Operation responded to a report from Wal-Mart on Olympic of a male running from the store with stolen merchandise before entering a black un-plated vehicle.

Officers were able to quickly stop the vehicle as it attempted to flee the parking lot. As officers contacted the occupants of the vehicle, they observed countless new, security tagged items surrounding the passengers.

While the individuals provided false identification, officers were able to identify the occupants as Anthony Freeman, Raymond Nelson, Hayden Slater, & Kalani Kapihe. As officers were detaining Freeman and Nelson, both were found to be carrying loaded firearms; the firearm found on Freeman was found to be reported stolen out of Beaverton.

Investigators conducting follow-up found that many of the items found during the arrests on the 29th were from a retailer at a Eugene mall. Investigators learned that the items had been stolen in a ‘snatch & grab’ theft on Nov. 29th. The four suspects were the men identified in the aforementioned incident in Springfield.

Additionally, when an employee chased after the men, they entered the same vehicle in which they were later stopped. Two of the suspects pulled firearms on the employee before fleeing the area.

Freeman, Nelson, Slater, and Kapihe were all lodged on the charges listed below. In total, over $2000 worth of stolen goods were recovered from the vehicle in addition to the stolen firearms.
