NARRATIVE OF INCIDENT:

On September 30th, 2022, at 12:26 PM the Springfield Police Department received reports of an armed carjacking in the 3100 block of Gateway Street. Two male suspects reportedly approached a female victim who had parked her vehicle to go into a store. One of the suspects pointed a gun and threatened the victim, instructing her to get back in the vehicle. The suspects then took the vehicle, without the victim, and fled from the scene.

At 1:01 PM similar males were called in near the 800 block of Oakdale Ave, within close proximity of the carjacking incident location. An observant community member described the suspects and the property they were carrying, which matched the two suspects and the victim’s property that had been in the stolen vehicle. The suspects briefly entered an apartment before fleeing in the victim’s vehicle.

At 3:20 PM the involved stolen vehicle was located unoccupied at an apartment complex in Eugene, 1180 Willamette Street. A short time later, Carter-Hamilton returned to the apartment on Oakdale and was taken into custody by officers who were observing the unit. Carter-Hamilton was found to be in possession of a concealed semi-automatic handgun. A search warrant was conducted at the apartment and additional evidence relevant to the case was seized.  Due to severity of the crimes committed, SPD began working closely with the Eugene Police Department to locate Avington who was thought to frequent the downtown area of Eugene. The search stretched into the early morning hours when Eugene’s Street Crimes Unit located Avington in a vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. Avington fled on foot but was immediately taken into custody without incident.
