NARRATIVE OF INCIDENT: On April 14th, 2021 at 1331 hrs Officers with the Springfield Police Department conducted a traffic stop near 18th Street and Olympic Street in Springfield. They contacted the driver, later identified as Malik Newsby, who provided two fictitious names prior to being identified. During the contact, Newsby displayed concerning behaviors when he began concealing something under his right leg. It was also discovered Newsby had an outstanding warrant for his arrest regarding a prior unrelated incident for providing false information to police and was also wanted for questioning related to a stolen firearm incident (21-1864). When officers attempted to take Newsby into custody he physically resisted their efforts. A struggle ensued, but officers were able to safely take Newsby into custody with no injuries to Newsby or officers. Once in custody it was learned the item Newsby was concealing under his leg was a loaded 380 Kel-Tec semi-automatic handgun. Newsby is a convicted felon and it is unlawful for him to possess such a weapon, let alone have it concealed. He was lodged at the Lane County Jail for the listed charges.
