NARRATIVE OF INCIDENT:
On August 26th, at approximately 11:15 am, SPD responded to a residence in the 700 block of 60th St after receiving a report of a domestic assault that had just occurred. The victim of the assault fled the residence to a neighbor’s home and the neighbor called 911. The woman reported being assaulted by her husband and hearing a gunshot coming from inside her residence as she fled. It was unknown to the victim and the responding officers if that gunshot was directed at the victim or something else. The woman was not struck by the gunfire. As officers arrived, they contacted the victim, who was still close by, and evacuated her out of the area to a location where medics could respond and evaluate her injuries.
While this was done, other SPD officers responded to the home and secured the perimeter, not knowing if the suspect would flee the home. Medics arrived and transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment of her non-life-threatening injuries. SPD requested the assistance of the Metro drone team (which consists of officers from the Springfield Police Department and the Eugene Police Department) to respond to assist with perimeter containment and, later, to check the interior of the residence. SPD also requested assistance from the Lane County Sheriff’s office, to provide an armored vehicle response, allowing SPD officers to be in a position to safely respond to any other gunfire or other lethal threats from inside the house.
As the incident progressed, SPD crisis negotiators tried but were unable to make contact with the suspect. Investigators obtained information that suggested the gunfire heard may have been a self-inflicted gunshot on behalf of the suspect. Utilizing an already open door to the residence, drone operators flew drones inside the residence and obtained visual contact, confirming the suspect was deceased and appeared to have suffered a self-inflicted gunshot. Officers entered the house and confirmed what drone operators had seen and secured the scene. SPD Detectives were called to the scene to take over the investigation. Evidence gleaned from the investigation confirmed the assault suspect suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
SPD thanks the Eugene Police Department and the Lane County Sheriff’s office for their assistance in the response to this incident.
