Springfield, OR – On Monday, May 26, community members joined The American Legion Post #40 and the City of Springfield for the 76th Annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Veterans Plaza in Willamalane Park. The solemn gathering served as a powerful tribute to servicemembers who gave their lives in defense of our nation.
The ceremony featured heartfelt tributes, traditional military honors, and reflections from civic and veteran leaders.

“Memorial Day is not about celebration; it’s about reflection,” said Springfield Mayor Sean VanGordon. “Those we remember today gave their lives not just for a flag, but for the freedoms we hold dear. Our duty is to carry their legacy forward, not just in words, but in how we live and serve each other.”
Mayor VanGordon read aloud the names of Springfield residents who lost their lives while serving in the military, a moment of solemn remembrance underscored by the traditional Battlefield Cross display and the playing of Taps.
Congresswoman Val Hoyle added a personal touch to the program by sharing a letter written by a family member who was killed in action during World War II. Her tribute reminded the audience of the deeply personal stories behind every name remembered and the generations of families impacted by war.
Additional speakers included American Legion Post #40 Commander Nick Gillaspie and Lane County Commissioner and Navy Veteran David Loveall.

The event concluded with the ceremonial folding of the American flag and a moment of silence, reminding all in attendance of the deep cost of freedom.
