Walk and Roll Springfield – PL2126

Development & Public Works

Help shape the future of walking, biking, and rolling in Springfield!

The City of Springfield is working with Alta Planning + Design on Walk & Roll Springfield, a new Active Transportation Plan that will help guide future investments in sidewalks, bikeways, crossings, trails, and connections to transit over the next 20 years. Through this planning process, we will identify ways to:

    • Improve safety for walking, biking, and rolling*
    • Fill gaps in the sidewalk and bikeway network
    • Improve east-west and north-south connections
    • Help people get to the destinations they care about (such as schools, jobs, parks, shopping, and transit stops)

*Rolling includes using wheelchairs, mobility devices, scooters, skateboards, or other wheeled ways of getting around.

Why is the City creating a new active transportation plan?

Springfield has changed a lot over the past 25 years, and so have the ways people travel. This plan is an important update to Springfield’s 1998 Bicycle Plan, and will become the City’s main plan for walking, biking, and rolling.

With the community’s support, Walk & Roll Springfield will help the City:

    • Better understand existing challenges, barriers, and gaps in the walking and biking networks
    • Plan a well-connected network that makes it easier and safer to reach schools, parks, businesses, transit stops, and other community destinations
    • Prioritize future transportation infrastructure projects for funding and construction

How can I get involved?

To make sure this update reflects what the Springfield community wants and needs, we encourage you to participate in the planning process. Your feedback will help identify important issues, shape project recommendations, and guide future transportation investments. Whether you are a daily bike commuter, a casual stroller, a transit rider, or someone who mostly drives, we want to hear from you.

Project Timeline

The City will be working on the Walk & Roll Springfield plan between August 2026 and March 2028. The project schedule below shows what this process will look like and when we will ask for community input to shape the plan.

Community engagement will happen in two phases. During Phase 1, we will work with the community to identify:

  • Where walking, biking, and rolling work well
  • Where gaps and barriers exist
  • Safety issues and concerns
  • Community priorities for future improvements

Then, using what we learned in Phase 1, we will develop recommendations for future projects and priorities. We will work with the Springfield community to refine these before presenting a draft plan for public review and City adoption.

Project timeline from 2026 to 2028 outlining steps from community input to final adoption of Walk & Roll Springfield plan.
