Transportation (Streets)

Springfield’s street system is more than just the road surfaces, it is also lighting, traffic control, bicycle facilities, landscaping and sidewalks. The Transportation Section works to provide an efficient multi-modal transportation system of roads, paths, sidewalks and other facilities for the benefit and use of auto, truck, bicycle, bus users, and pedestrians of all ages and abilities. This is done by preparing comprehensive plans for area wide facilities, identifying locations for new street, bike path and sidewalk facilities, responding to development proposals, preparing construction drawings for streets, multi-use paths, sidewalk projects and roundabouts, as managing the construction of projects.

Additionally, traffic signals owned by the City and the Oregon Department of Transportation are timed for safety and efficiency. Street lights are checked regularly for burned out bulbs. Citizen inquiries about new signs, signals, and lights, as well as speeding and safety concerns are investigated and cost effective solutions are implemented. Once these important infrastructure needs are in place the Operations Division staff provides high quality street maintenance in order to preserve them for many years of use.
