Springfield, OR – The Springfield community is warmly invited to join in a meaningful observance of Día de Muertos with a month-long series of events hosted by the Springfield Public Library and Springfield History Museum. This free, community celebration provides an opportunity to honor loved ones, celebrate life, and engage with rich cultural traditions.

On Tuesday, October 14, come see the free documentary film about El Día de los Muertos, at the library; NiXantolo, with filmakers Cuitlahuac Arreola Martinez & Matthew Olmos. This film is in the indigenous language Nahuatl with English and Spanish subtitles. The screening will be followed by a short discussion with the filmmakers.
From now until November 4, community members are encouraged to bring personal memorial items and artisan crafts to display as part of the Community Memorial and Ofrenda at the Springfield History Museum. Items can be turned in at the Springfield Public Library.
On Saturday, October 25, families are invited to join Eugene Arte Latino to make inspired crafts from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Springfield History Museum’s all ages haunted museum event.
On Saturday, November 1, artist Jessica Zapata of Eugene Arte Latino will lead a special workshop at the Springfield Public Library. This workshop offers hands-on opportunities to create and reflect.
Then, on Wednesday, November 5, experience an evening of remembrance and festivities beginning with a procession from City Hall to the Springfield History Museum. The celebration will feature live music from Piel de Canela and Mariachi Cuervo, sugar skull decorating led by artists Jessica Zapata and Diana Ramirez, and a dedication of the community ofrenda. Light refreshments will be served.
This event is made possible through the generous support of the Springfield Utility Board (SUB), the Spark Fund, and community partners including the Springfield Arts Commission, Eugene Arte Latino, and Comunidad y Herencia Cultural.
