INVOLVED SUSPECT:
Smith, Boyd Robert 49 Year-Old Male
Daan, Primitivo 28 Year-Old Male
NARRATIVE OF INCIDENT:
On October 15 at 0637hrs, Springfield Police Department Officers responded to the area of S 18th Street regarding an audible alarm at a storage lot. As officers began to check the area, they observed a man jumping over the lot’s fencing. Officers headed towards the fence and saw that the fence had also been cut in the area.
As officers followed in the direction the man had fled, they noticed property that was tagged in relation to the lot that had been burglarized. Officers continued along the area railroad tracks in an attempt to locate the fleeing man. At that time, a Eugene Police Department officer who is a member of the Metro Drone Team arrived on scene to assist. The drone that was deployed was equipped to see heat signatures, which is invaluable in situations with thick covering and brush.
With guidance from the drone operator, an officer began checking heat signatures along the railroad tracks. Eventually, the operator observed two distinct signatures off of a path originating not far from the officer. The officer followed the path and located two male suspects (Boyd Smith and Primitivo Daan) who were hiding and appeared to be sweating and breathing heavily.
The officer was able to detain the men and question them further. One of the suspects admitted that the pair had been in the lot after cutting the fence with bolt cutters, which were recovered at the scene. The pair were arrested and lodged on the charges listed below.
The support of the drone operator and the equipment proved invaluable in the capture of the two men, serving as another example of the added capabilities that the Metro Drone Team provides to officers in the field.
