Check out UpStream Art 2021 from the comfort of home!

Upstream Art 2021 is now complete and the City of Springfield’s Stormwater Team is pleased to present our UpStream Art Virtual Tour to share five new, public works of art with you!

The project promotes healthy waterways and support local artists. Our newest murals were completed on September 3, 2021. The UpStream Art collection currently consists of 31 eye-catching storm drain murals.

Held every summer since 2016, the UpStream Art project reminds us of the connection between city streets and local waterways. When it rains, stormwater washes over our city, sending everyday pollutants into storm drains and out to streams. Common pollutants include oil from leaking vehicles, overapplied moss and weed killers, bacteria from animal waste, litter such as cigarette butts, and debris including fallen leaves and sediment. This harms the waterways we rely on for health, recreation, businesses, and agriculture. UpStream Art promotes healthy humans and healthy rivers by offering inspiration for keeping pollution out of storm drains.

The project starts with a Call To Artists in the spring. In the summer, five artist designs are selected by a panel of judges consisting of local arts leaders, art educators, and business owners. In late summer, artists paint their murals over a span of two days using special traffic paints provided by the City. They are paid for their work. Since the murals are on pavement, the designs wear away over time, but Springfield’s Stormwater Team slows the process by applying a sealant once a year.

Once you’ve enjoyed the Virtual Tour, round up your favorite people and visit the site in person! It’s a great way to enjoy the outdoors while appreciating the art and our City.
