SPD Crisis Negotiation Team and SWAT work together to peacefully resolve a standoff that lasted more than four hours.

Springfield Police arrest Jason Aaron Norton, age 46, without incident at about 11:00 am Monday on booking charges of Assault IV APA (Felony), Strangulation APA (Felony), and Menacing APA (Felony), and two counts of Burglary.

On August 15th, at about 11:57 pm Springfield Police responded to the 2000 block of Marcola Road, Springfield, for a report of an assault.

Officers arrived and interviewed the victim. Based on the victim’s statements and appearance, officers determined that there was probable cause to arrest the suspect, and attempted to contact the man in his apartment, which is in the same complex as the victim.

Officers went to Norton’s apartment but Norton refused to open the door. Officers were not allowed to enter Norton’s apartment without a warrant. While officers were trying to get Norton to come out, the victim had left the area and was safe.

When the woman returned to her apartment early this morning, she says Norton had broken into her apartment, was waiting and threatened her. Norton returned to his apartment. The victim called SPD again. Patrol, SWAT and the SPD Crisis Negotiation Teams worked patiently and tactfully to de-escalate the situation until we had a safe and successful outcome.

Just before 11:00 am Monday, officers were able to make entry through the front door with a K9. Within a few minutes Norton was arrested without use of force.

Norton is lodged in the Lane County Jail.
